THE MONROE HANDLER!
Regarded by some as one of the best modified Mustang II's ever made, the
Monroe Handler helped in turning some people's opinion around regarding the
little Mustang II and got quite a bit of attention! Here's a quote from an article in Hot Rod magazine at the time
the Handler was being produced:
"According to Monroe Auto Equipment, our cover car, along with six
duplicates, will be on tour throughout the country during the latter
part of the year. Basically, the program consists of transporting the
seven 'Stangs-in a specially built trailer- to 130 car shows, putting
them on display at various major races starting, hopefully, with the
Indy 500. Even Revell plans on producing a 1/25-inch scale model which
should be available in late '77"
I received these photos from Clinton Mutch, showing the
incredibly cool looks of the "Monroe Handler" Mustang II. Only a few were made,
and from what I hear, they were awesome. I can't say how much I enjoyed seeing these pictures.
Check out what Clinton had
to say along with these sweet pix!
The "Monroe Handler" was done as a three part series by Hot Rod
magazine.
Part one, "A Horse of a Different Color" was done in June 1977 and
covered all of the work involved in performing the body modifications.
Part two, "Get Down" was featured in August 1977, highlighting the
suspension aspect of this fantastic II. Last but not least, part three
"The Duke of Windsor" was featured in September '77 and covered the
building up of the Jack Roushe poked & stroked 363 inch Windsor...
Other articles I've found include an in depth article on the first 5.0L
II's built. They were only available in Mexico and they were built in
1974. The article can be found in Hot Rod's June '74 edition.
May '76 issue of Super Stock magazine has a pretty good article entitled
"Livvie-the grey monster from Livonia" on intalling a 429CJ in your II.
There's alot of cutting involved.
I also remember reading some time back about a drag test of either the
Cobra II or the King Cobra - right off the lot. This test was performed
by none other than "Dyno" Don Nicholson...
