About My Car
While stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, I decided to get a different car. I went to a few different car lots looking for a Mustang. In June 1981, I went to a lot that had 2 Mustang II's - a coupe and a hatchback. I liked the looks
of the coupe, but with the little fourbanger engine, it needed a lot of work. The car barely ran! The dealer showed me the hatchback. I fired up the 302 and took it for a spin. One of the few times I had ever seen the salesman hanging
on to the dash. It needed a little bit of body work (damage to the rear left quarter panel), but I bought it.
One of the first mods was to add sidepipes to the car. Money was the biggest factor in getting them. I started quite a rage with them. Less than a year later, I was sideswiped by a Trans-Am when I stopped for a one car accident. The passenger side was crunched from bumper to bumper. I got the car fixed and picked it up the day I left Fort Campbell. The car was parked in Indiana for two years while I was stationed in Korea.
Returning from Korea, I was then stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. The car went through quite the transformation. I rebuilt the engine, added a Weiand intake, Holley 4 BBL carb, and a mild cam, and got a chance to put it on the local race track. I was tired of green (being in the Army and wearing and working with everything green) and decided for a change. A friend of mine and I prepped the car and he painted it Midnight Regatta Blue. I had most of the interior
changed to blue when it was once again time to go overseas.
After a three year stint in Germany, I was then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. I drove the car from it's resting place in Indiana to Washington. Three years of sitting was pretty rough on the car and I had to get the engine and transmission reworked. I added a sunroof, South Side Machine lift bars, subframe connectors, and finished converting the interior to blue.
I was selected to attend a school at Fort Gordon, Georgia. I was to be there for five and a half months and decided to drive the Mustang. Two weeks after my return from Fort Gordon, I was hit by a Hummer. I was stopped at a stop sign and the Hummer - belonging to a Military Police commander (he was in it) short cornered a left turn. The force of the impact broke the dash in 3 places. Messed me up as well. After about 5 months of bickering with the Army, I took the
car to my insurance. They forced the issue and I got my money. I found a 1976 Cobra II with a four cylinder and the main body was in real bad shape. I bought the car as the front end was in real good shape. I also took the Cobra interior as well as the side window louvers and rear spoiler. I bought a front spoiler from Tony Branda. I got another pony for the grill and now it sports two horses. I am not sure why I did it, but it is a cool effect.
Shortly after I had the car fixed, I joined the Pierce County Mustang Club, and was fortunate enough to win a few plaques.
